The United Association seeks to assist interested, qualified persons to obtain information and identify opportunities regarding training and employment in the union pipe trades industry. Profiles submitted through this system will be forwarded to appropriate United Association Local Unions and affiliated Training Programs to be considered by those organizations.

   Local Unions and Local Training Programs maintain their own, individual rules and policies regarding acceptance and exercise full control over all acceptance decisions. You will also have to submit a separate application in accordance with the requirements of the Local Union or Local Training Program to which you apply. You may also have to take a test and/or have an interview with the local organization.    To join the UA without any prior experience, individuals enter a United Association five-year apprenticeship program and are part of a select group of men and women motivated to learn a complex and challenging trade while upholding the ideals of trade unionism. Applicants are evaluated on the same fair basis, without regard to race, sex, national origin or religious affiliation.UA apprentices learn through both classroom and on-the-job training in what is considered by many to be the best construction industry apprentice program in the world. The five-year apprenticeship period is divided into one-year segments, each of which includes 1,700 to 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 216 hours of related classroom instruction. All UA apprentices receive a strong general education background in the trade, with core courses in basics such as mathematics, drawing and so on. At a certain point, apprentices can choose a specific path to follow, to become trained as a journeyman plumber, pipefitter, sprinkler fitter, service mechanic, and so on. Apprenticeship is not an easy time: UA apprentices must work the same hours as journeymen plus attend night classes. Yet, this can be a highly rewarding career path for an individual who is motivated to learn the piping trade and become an active member of a proud and noble trade union.


   Once UA members complete their five-year apprenticeships, they become full-fledged journeymen. However, their education in the trade is by no means over at this point. In fact, United Association members are very serious about pursuing lifelong training and most of them take advantage of the many opportunities they have to update and expand their skills. For example, UA members might work during the day on a construction site welding pipe or installing sprinkler systems, or they may be making service calls as a plumber or air conditioning mechanic. But, at night after a hard day's work, those same UA craftsmen may be found in classes at their local union studying subjects like orbital welding, valve repair, and computer aided drawing.    Becoming a United Association journeyman is really about making a serious commitment to a lifetime of learning and training, and it's this commitment which translates into a quality product and significant cost savings for contractors and construction users who employ UA members.
